svn help

Purpose

The svn help command helps you to understand the purpose, the argument list and the order of the argument list, as well as which options are mandatory.

Pre-Conditions

As long as you have a Subversion command line client installed you can run the svn help command. Currently popular command line clients for Subversion include

  • Silk SVN – one of the best Windows command line clients
  • Ubuntu apt-get subversion-clientUbuntu considers Subversion core so packages it and supports it
  • IntelliJ and Eclipse – these mainly JAVA IDEs (Integrated Development Environment) have many subversion clients installed

The Command’s Architecture

Subversion has 7 basic commands so running svn help «command-name» gets you help.

  1. svn help add – help adding working copy files and folders into the repository
  2. svn help status – help for acquiring a report of new, deleted and modified files and folders
  3. svn help add – help adding working copy files and folders into the repository
  4. svn help delete – help deleting repository held files and folders
  5. svn help import – help importing a local directory into the subversion repository
  6. svn help export – help grabbing a directory tree from subversion (as opposed to creating a working directory

Don’t Forget

You don’t need credentials (username/password) to run the help command. You don’t even need a working subversion repository. All you need is a command line client.
